Loan
Instant loan app harassment
An app gives a small loan, takes your contacts and photos, then threatens and shames you for repayment.
Warning signs
- App demands access to contacts and gallery
- Lender is not listed with the RBI
Who is targeted most
People needing small amounts urgently, often before a salary date.
How the fraud works
The loan is small, approved in minutes and disbursed after heavy deductions, so you receive less than the sanctioned amount while owing the full sum within seven to fourteen days. The interest is charged on the full sum.
The real product is your phone. Contacts, gallery and message access are collected during installation and used for recovery: calls to your family and colleagues, group messages naming you a defaulter, and edited photographs.
The usual sequence
- 1An ad or SMS offers a loan with no documents.
- 2Installation requests contacts, gallery and SMS permissions.
- 3Less than the sanctioned amount is disbursed, full repayment demanded in days.
- 4Recovery calls begin before the due date.
- 5Your contact list is messaged and photographs are misused.
How to protect yourself
- Borrow only from banks, NBFCs or apps listed as RBI-registered lenders.
- Deny contact and gallery permissions. A genuine lender does not need them.
- Harassment is a criminal offence. Report it instead of paying more.
Comment rules
- Do not share bank details, OTPs, card numbers, Aadhaar or complaint numbers.
- Do not name or accuse individuals. Make official reports at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Comments are reviewed before publication. Never pay anyone who offers to recover your money.
