How it happened

He needed ₹5,000 before a salary date. An ad led to an app that approved the loan in four minutes with no documents. It asked for access to contacts, photos and SMS during installation, which he allowed.

₹3,850 was disbursed. The full ₹5,000 was due in seven days. On day four the calls began, then messages to his contact list saying he was a defaulter, then an edited photograph sent to his workplace group.

He paid ₹27,000 across three weeks to stop the calls. The demands continued until he reported the app, changed his number and filed a complaint.

  • Check whether a lender is registered with the RBI before installing anything.
  • Harassment for recovery is a criminal offence. Paying does not stop it. Reporting does.
